QUARTERBACK SCHOOL CHAPTER 1 AND QUIZ: RG3

RG3 QB School 1By Jaboner Jackson 8 a.m. | Last year, footballphds.com started Quarterback School, in which we examined the skillset of Cam Newton, who had been projected to go number one overall in the 2011 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers.  This year, the consensus pick is Andrew Luck out of Stanford, who will go number one overall to the Indianapolis Colts.  Meanwhile, the second pick of the 2012 NFL Draft will be Robert Griffin III (RG3).  The Washington Redskins recently traded up to the number two overall pick to nab the talented quarterback out of Baylor.  Scouts have been more critical of Griffin than Luck.  While our draft expert, Rock Mayock, prepares his definitive and always controversial 2012 Mock Draft, I thought it was an opportune time to revisit Quarterback School.  Of course, Rock is the undisputed draft expert but over the many years of hanging out with him, I have picked up a few things here and there.  As Rock says, the basic difference between NFL and college football is the speed at which the game is played.  This difference highlights several of the keys to picking the franchise quarterback.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS MORTGAGE FUTURE IN BLOCKBUSTER TRADE WITH ST. LOUIS RAMS

breaking newsBy Rock Mayock 10:30 p.m. from somewhere on the road | The 2012 NFL Draft only six weeks away however the first blockbuster trade has already taken place. With the contenders for the Peyton Manning sweepstakes being whittled down the list of teams out of the running has become quite clear. Sitting atop that list of teams out of contention is the Washington Redskins. Due to last season’s abysmal QB play of Sexy Rexy Grossman and John Beck the Skins had to do something to shore up the most important position in sports. With their needs identified the only question remaining is how much the Redskins would sacrifice to fulfill these needs. Tonight we have our answer.

NOTES FROM NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 THURSDAY NIGHT GAMES

By Jaboner Jackson 8 am | It's no secret that I'm not a fan of preseason NFL football but last night I sucked it up and watched at least parts of all three Thursday night's Week 3 games.  Week 3 games are usually the most representative of a team’s status since starters oftentimes play an entire half.  Here are quick hits from each game. Since scores are irrelevant in preseason football, I don't talk about the outcome of the game.

EARTHQUAKE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR OUR WASHINGTON DC AND NEW YORK READERS

Earthquake Survival GuideBy Jaboner Jackson 12 pm | Yesterday, Washington D.C. and New York experienced a 5.8 magnitude earthquake during lunch hour.  The earthquake was centered in Mineral, VA.  Thankfully, no serious damage was reported and there were no injuries.  Since the FOOTBALLPHDS hail from Southern California--where we have lived through the Northridge Quake in 1994 amongst many others—we consider it our obligation to our Wonderful Readers on the East Coast to publish this Survival Guide.  (Before we continue, though, we once again are thankful that there were no serious damages or injuries reported from yesterday’s quake.)

WASHINGTON REDSKINS PREDICTIONS: MIKE SHANAHAN TO STINK AGAIN

By Jaboner Jackson 8 am | We do not pretend to not be from Los Angeles, which means that we do not pretend to not cover the AFC West more than the other NFL divisions (how do you like that double negative, Reader Grammarian Granny?).  Nonetheless, we get a lot of mail from our Wonderful Readers about their disappointment that we do not venture off into the NFC much, especially the NFC East.  In fact, our Wonderful Readers still send hate mail to Rock Mayock for deliberately skipping over all 2011 Draft Analysis for the New York Giants, and now our Wonderful Readers are asking me why I am doing the same.  Sorry, Giants fans, but we are skipping you over again.  Instead, we venture into Washington Redskins territory, where Mike Shanahan has clearly lost his mind.

NFL FREE AGENCY UPDATE FOR TUESDAY

Jeromey Clary Free agency san diego chargersBy Jaboner Jackson 930 pm | It was a busy first day of free agency in the 2011 NFL season.  Not only did several teams upgrade immediately through free agency but a notable few laid the groundwork for trades.  Matt Leinart (aka Mattie Pie) has been a FOOTBALLPHDS man crush for years.  He is headed for the Seattle Seahawks, where he will be reunited with his college coach from USC, Pete Carroll.  Leinart will start off third on the quarterback depth chart because the Seahawks have also come to terms with Tarvaris Jackson.  Both players are expected to sign on Friday.  This means that Matt Hasselbeck will play elsewhere in 2011.
