Hop HengeBy Rock Mayock 10:00 p.m. |  Greetings wonderful readers and brew lovers alike. It’s been awhile since we last explored the delectable world of great brews. As a result we are returning with a vengeance. Enter Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA.

As we know, the FOOTBALLPHDS are very partial to the offerings from Deschutes. These fine folks have produced favorites such as Red Chair NWPA and Mirror Pond Pale Ale. While both exceptional brews, they pale in comparison to Deschute’s foray into IPAs. This beautiful deep golden brew with a lovely creamy white laced head is a brew to be savored. Here are the particulars…

Hop Henge is a huge IPA loaded with tons of hoppy goodness paired with malty/bitter undertones. Most notable are the heavy grapefruit and pine notes that play off of the caramel bitter aftertaste. With 95 IBUs there is more than adequate carbonation without making it difficult to drink. At 10.6% ABV, this brew packs a significant punch however it finishes clean and does NOT linger on palate.

Overall it is a great brew at a great value. You can find Hop Henge between January-April at your local purveyor of fine brews. The FOOTBALLPHDS recommend California Heights Market in Bixby Knolls, CA, because our main men Raj and Caesar will hook you up. For the stat geeks here are the details:

  1. This segment is long over due. Hop Henge is a great, yet very under rated, beer. Deschutes has changed the profile of this beer since it was first released in 2009. It currently has bigger hops and ABV than its original incarnation.
