By Rock Mayock 9:30 p.m. | A special FOOTBALLPHDS’ “Happy Birthday!” goes out to competitive body builder turned actor turned business man turned California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who celebrates his 65th birthday today.
The Schwarzenegger story is truly one that only Hollywood could imagine. He was born in the small Austrian village of Thal where he idolized American body builders and actors such as Reg Park, Steve Reeves and John Wayne. At the age of 14 or 17 (it depends which version of the story you hear) Arnold started his fledgling body building career. By the age of 20 he became the youngest man to ever win the amateur Mr. Universe title. He would go on to win the Mr. Universe title 3 times (1968, 1969 & 1970) and the Mr. Olympia title a record seven times (1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1980).
Arnold is the rare athlete that was able to translate his on the field (or in the gym) success into a post competition career. Aside from his well documented movie career as an actor, Arnold has also enjoyed success in the world of business. During his competition days he owned and operated a bricklaying business along with his friend and partner Franco Columbu. He used the proceeds from the bricklaying business to start a mail order business selling bodybuilding related equipment and fitness tapes. He then used the money from the bricklaying and mail order business to purchase rental properties. The rental properties made way for other real estate holdings that resulted with a large equity stake in the investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors.
Since the personal and professional accolades that we can heap upon Arnold’s broad shoulders are inexhaustible we will place our focus on his greatest moments expressed in both pictures and words:
Without a doubt Arnold is a man amongst boys. Although he has caught some bad press for past transgressions, he is still #1 in our book. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Arnold!
